As you are shooting with the bride and groom, you spend a lot of time thinking about what wedding photography poses you should use that will make them look their best. Since posing is a critical part of your shooting routine, we thought we should cover a very important part of the wedding day- groom prep shots!

1. Detail Shots

When you start off your shoot have him lay out all of his accessories. This usually includes many things like his shoes, bowtie, cologne, belt, cufflinks ect ect. This is the perfect opportunity for you to tap into your creative side. Try experimenting with different angles to get the look that you like.

2. Putting on and tying shoes

Groom poses like this make a great addition to "getting ready." Allow the groom to sit down, on a couch or stool, at a head on or angled position while you take his solo shots. Groom getting ready photos that simultaneously capture action will go a long way for the bride. I usually like to do a mixture of close up and full body shots for these type of poses.

3. Adjusting cufflinks or tie

As you pose the groom, suggest that he adjust his cufflinks or his tie in the shot. When his hands are moving, he will not focus on posing as much and the shot will look more natural. Be sure to also capture his expression as he focuses on the details of his attire.

4. Putting on watch

Posing the groom can sometimes be very different than poses the bride. Always remember to try poses that show off his masculinity. To do this, have him stand up straight while looking down at his watch, as if he was reading the time. This will create a pose that showcases his confidence in front of the camera, which highlights his best features. You can also get shots fo the groom actually putting the watch on.

5. Reading vow letter

This particular shot is created just for the bride. Get the groom to read the letter out loud to create an emotional image for her, or you can have him pose with it as a prop. Regardless of what you decide, be sure that the pose creates an image that is simply for the bride-to-be.

6. Putting on jacket

Another way to create action within your images is to document the groom placing his jacket on and buttoning it up. This is the last item he needs before he is ready to head to the ceremony. While he is in motion, you will capture a variety of expressions and poses that will create interest in the story of the wedding day.

7. Putting on Boutonniere

This is where the fun comes in! Have the dad, brother or best man step in to help with this shot, as this is who he usually has the closest relationship with. Get the groom laughing to create a "lively" pose and image for her. This is also the best time to capture candid shots as both parties are mostly likely still feeling a sense of laughter and emotion
